Traveling by Ferry to France From the UK
When traveling to France with your car, the most cost effective route is via ferry. When deciding which mode of transportation suits you, consider cost, convenience, trip length, flexibility and comfort.
Air travel can be costly, unless you shop around and book ahead. And even if you do find a good deal on a flight, there are additional expenses associated with transportation to and from the airport. The number of airports available you can travel from is limited as well. Security and check-in can be time-consuming and annoying, as can arrival procedures and procuring one’s luggage. The number of personal items brought must be limited, due to baggage restrictions. Comfort can be an issue too, as one must remain seated in sometimes cramped and narrow seats for the length of the journey.
Traveling to France by train allows for more flexibility in that you can bring along your car or travel as a foot passenger only. There is also a good selection of departure and arrival locations. Physical movement on trains tends to be less restrictive than on airplanes, as is the number of belongings one can bring. The trip is not overly long, especially with the modern trains, however, unless you do your research and book ahead, rail travel can be costly as well.
Traveling via bus or coach is can be the most cost effective way to France from the U.K. However, the trade offs for this include restrictive seating and a much longer trip. There is, however, a wider choice of departure and arrival points, although the amount of luggage permitted is limited.
Traveling by ferry to France is normally cheaper than the other methods of transport (excluding the bus), and you can travel as a passenger, or bring the car. Choices of departure and arrival points are more numerous than air travel allows, but more limited than those available when traveling by bus. Ferries to France are more comfortable than trains, airplanes or buses, as one can walk around. More luggage is also permitted, especially if one brings a car. A trip on a ferry to France is also not overly lengthy. When weighing the costs and benefits of the different methods of transport available from the U.K., ferries to France are clearly the most sensible way to travel.
