The French Paradox – How Those French Eat All That Fatty Food and Still Stay Healthy
Perhaps one question that has lingered in the minds of many is how the French can eat so many of those rich pastries and incredible cuisines and still remain healthy. One standpoint to this is that the French, like many of the European countries, are not consumed with the need to add heavy preservatives to the food. Things like MSG have not gained the appeal as they have in the United States. As MSG is capable of preserving food and enhancing the flavor, it is also a chemical that the body was not designed to consume. This has resulted in increased numbers of cancer, in digestive tract issues, and even in obesity in the United States.
Much of France has embraced the more traditional methods of cooking and also in more natural ingredients. This has been one of the more obvious reasons why the French have been able to consumer larger amounts of breaded products and still have less complications than those of their American counterparts. This has made some people in America reconsider the diets that they have had and also has been encouragement for them to see the ingredients of the items that they purchase in stores.
France has become a hybrid of two base forms of food, both the French and the Italian cuisines. With the growing interest in the Mediterranean flair that has developed in the Southern portions of France, there has been an increase in the amounts of both oil and also cooking agents. Still even with these items included into the base diet of the French, they have still shown a better long-term health standard than those from across the Atlantic.
Even in the infusion of the Mediterranean foods, there has been more use of olive oil and other natural based oils that are just recently gaining appeal in the United States. With the heavy use of oils and less use of enhancers in the form of chemicals, France has been one of the countries that have shown that there is more to food than just enhancements. Some of the most famous dishes have called France home and have had little change in the format of how they are made. This has been largely due to the fact that many of the French have no interest in consuming food that has items within them that have no real purpose.
Perhaps the biggest factor in why MSG and other enhancers have not made a big splash in France is the pride that many French have in their cooking. There are few places that can claim to be the center of cooking, and this is a claim that much of France has had for many generations. With the pride that comes from such a claim it is no surprise that people prefer the more traditional and natural methods to cooking and to the foods that are made. The French truly are proof that sometimes the modern approach is not always the best method in healthy living. A standard that some other countries are just starting to see and in turn are following.
