Why I’m Learning French Online
Paris, France is on many people’s short-list of places they want to see in their lifetime. This fall, I get my chance and will travel to Paris. I’m fully aware of the French infamous reputation for their treatment of tourists (especially Americans) so I thought I would learn a few French phrases before my upcoming trip to the world famous city of lights.
I was amazed how enthralled I got in learning French and I’ve discovered the French language to be fascinating and rich in history.
A little history of the French Language
The French language is a Romance language like Spanish and Italian which came from the old Gallo-Romance dialects. The language is a direct descendant of the Latin language spoke during the times of the mighty Roman Empire. The roots of modern French can be tracked to Northern France. And although the early language dates to the time of Julius Ceaser-today’s French language can be tracked to the 1300′s. Where it begins to take hold and spread throughout the world.
Over 350 million people around the world speak French as their first or second language. It’s the official language of 30 countries but large population groups in over 50 countries all over the world speak French.
French learning style
I found the best style for learning French was a course that was interactive, that I could learn online, was not boring, and that actually worked. My end-goal is to speak conversational French not to be a French language scholar.
A lot of the courses are stuffy and just plain hard to handle. When this occurs you will not learn the language. No matter what language you’re trying to learn.
I have found Rocket French the best online French learning course of all the many courses and software products out there. It met and exceeded my requirements mentioned above (online, interactive, fun-not boring, and it works!).
In order to get in the right mind set you must relax, have an open mind, and most importantly have fun! If you’re not having fun it will be hard to really learn French (this applies to any language).
I have found learning French to be challenging but fun and I now intend to continue being a student of the French language long after I return home form Paris.
