The French language is a beautiful sounding language that is a pleasure to learn. The problem I had when trying to learn though (and you probably have to) is that it’s difficult to learn a new language fast by reading a book. I began teaching myself French by reading many books, but never really made any significant progress, and certainly wasn’t confident of having a conversation in French. That all changed though thanks to lucky meeting!

Let me start by saying that learning a new language isn’t particularly difficult, but only if you are learning from a reliable source. This is to say that you need to be taught correctly and not just pick up any old book on “How to Speak French”. I think this is an error that many people make, and as a consequence a large percentage will never become fluent in speaking the French language as they give up because of slow progress.

At one stage I myself was going to give up learning French as I was finding it too difficult to get the hang of. Luckily for me I was introduced to a friend of a friend who happened to have learnt French. I felt embarrassed at first as he spoke a few sentences in French and wanted me to reply, but I couldn’t because I was simply not that advanced. I was quite amazed at how much of the language he knew so I began asking him how he learnt French. To my surprise he said that he began to learn French online.

My first impression when he mentioned learning French online was ordering a book to be delivered! It never occurred to me that there are high quality French learning resources online. The conversation that I had turned out to provide me with the advice that I needed and that has meant that I am now a fluent French speaker.

What made the difference by using this particular resource was that it didn’t solely depend on learning by reading through a book. It had hours of audio lessons, grammar lessons, and interactive software that really helps to clear up any misunderstandings you might have with sentence structure for example.

If you are thinking about learning French I would definitely say “go for it”! It’s a really nice language to speak and very enjoyable to learn. Please do yourself a favor though and save wasting money on the many French language guides available. Instead, invest in the same resource that I used and that I highly recommend in order to learn French online fast.

When people start out learning French, they often fail because ethey dont have a definite reason to learn French. This is particularly obvious in schools, where pupils attend classes, but make little progress, simply because they dont want to be there, and they dont have enough interest to stimulate them through the difficult task of learning French.

If you are contemplating learning French, before you even start to open a book, or put a CD language rom on the computer, I recommend you make sure that you first have a solid, definite reason to learn French, or your fate may be the same as the average school pupils!

Where do you find a reason to learn French? First of all, there is the obvious commercial benefit. Did you know that more than 40 countries boast French as an official language, and that there are 176 million French speakers in the world? Admitedly, that may not be as many as English, with 460 million, but French still accounts for a huge slice of the world markets. Imagine how much your promotion prospects will soar, if you are are in a company which has dealings with French speaking countries, and you are a fluent french speaker.

Then there are the cultural reasons. France is one of the most civilized and cultures countries in the world. France is home to devine wines, sumptuous cuisine, impressionist art, and Paris rivals Milan as the European center of the fashion industry.

Learning French gives you access to the real France, or the real beating heart of any other french speaking country you want to get to know better. You cannot know a country in depth until you know its people and its culture, and the key to understanding both is the language.

Here is another reason to learn French: When you learn a foreign language, you learn more about your own language in the process. If you learn a language related to English, as French is, from the point of view of lexis at any rate, you will enrich your vocabulary and increase your proficiency in both languages.

So what?, you might say. If you want a purely materialistic reason for enriching your comman of English, then here it is: Did you know that people with wider vocabularies earn more on average than people without such knowledge? Why do you think there are so many vocabulary enhancement courses out there? This is just one more reason to learn French.
