#1 Pimsleur French

The famous Pimsleur programs are somewhat controversial among serious language learners, mostly because it doesn’t even attempt to teach you how to read or write French. I think though that Pimsleur makes up for this by focusing on what it does best: helping you speak French and never letting you forget it. As Pimsleur is very expensive (over $800) it’s not going to be suitable for most people, but if you can afford it and you don’t mind not learning how to read/write French, then Pimsleur is for you.

#2 Fluenz French

Fluenz French is a relatively new learn French program, it was designed and marketed as a direct competitor to the more established Rosetta Stone program. It’s goal is to accurately simulate a language tutor actually being right there with you, which is of course the best way to learn French. I don’t know whether Fluenz has succeeded with this, but I think future editions of Fluenz will prove to be very successful. If you don’t mind being stuck to your computer to learn French and you can afford it, then look into the Fluenz French learn French program.

#3 Michel Thomas French

Michel Thomas was a polish linguist who produced quite a number of language courses during his time. The general setup was that Michel had two complete beginners that he would instruct, carefully introducing words and building their vocabulary like lego blocks. One point of criticism is that Michel was not a native speak of French, and so his students often pick up his imperfections of speech.

#4 Rocket French

Rocket French is also a quite new learn French program, it has elements of both Pimsleur and Fluenz, with audio sections and also some software exercises. It’s difficult to really think of anything wrong with Rocket French. I suppose if you really just want to speak French then you should go with Pimsleur or Michel Thomas, otherwise if you’re looking to speak and read/write French then you should go with Rocket French.
