IMPROPER ACCENTS: In French, the correct pronunciation of a word is determined by the accent. You need to learn what they mean and what words they are used in. In order to write in French, you have to learn how to type them as well.

GENDER: Just like in Spanish, all nouns are either feminine or masculine. You will need to learn the gender of each word. Otherwise people you are speaking to won’t understand what you are trying to say.

CONTRACTIONS: Unlike in English, contractions are required in French. For instance, when you see a 2 letter word like te, la or le, followed by a word that begins with a vowel or an H, the vowel in the 2 letter word drops off. For example, le ami becomes l’ami. This doesn’t apply where the second word begins with a consonant, except where there is an H.

H: In the French language there are 2 examples of the letter H. Either way they are both silent. However it is important that you understand the difference between the two. In one instance the H acts like a vowel, in the other like a consonant. The aspirated H is like a consonant, so there are no contractions allowed. The muted H acts like a vowel, so in this case contractions and liaisons are allowed.

YOU: There are 2 ways to say you in French. Just like in some Spanish “tu” means you. If you are referring to more than one of anything in French, “vous” is the proper way to say you. It also makes a difference how well you know someone in regards to these 2 ways to say you in French.

When you are trying to learn to speak French, everything will seem different. In the beginning you will certainly make some mistakes. However the sooner you can stop repeating the same mistakes over and over, the less difficult it will become.
