Gift giving can be torture for me. Each of us has that person on our gift list who is absolutely impossible to buy for. I had just such a person. A girlfriend of years. I never saw any gift I gave her in her home over the 20+ years I knew her. Maybe she just thought I had terrible taste. I also know that she was what Seinfeld referred to as a “re-gift-er”, packaging up gifts she’s received and giving them to others. I was able to beat her at her own game one year. I gave her the gift of personalized jewelry. I know that she was born in May so her birthstone is Emerald. I know that she loves sterling silver jewelry. I had the most lovely necklace custom made for her birthday. Almost every time I’ve seen her since I’ve seen her wearing that necklace. Just wait until Christmas when I give her the matching earrings!

Now that you've got a few French words and phrases under your belt, it's time to work on your pronunciation. You should start be learning how to say the alphabet. This article proposes two ways of learning the alphabet in French. One one them will work for you.

Now that you’ve got a few French words and phrases under your belt, it’s time to work on your pronunciation. I have a French friend who told me that when he was in London on holiday he tried to ask for a bottle of water from a vendor. Unfortunately, although he was using the right words, he had to repeat himself maybe ten times for the vendor to understand. It wasn’t what my friend was saying, but the way he was saying it.

This is likely to happen to you when practicing your French on native speakers. Get a vowel wrong, and you are likely to be misunderstood. Giving things like your name and address can be problematic, too, for your Anglo-Saxon name, if you have one, or your address will sound alien and be hard to recognize.

This happens to me a lot in France, even though after living here for several years my French is of a high standard. My problem is my surname, Lewis. Pronouncing it the English way is completely unintelligible to French ears, who often think that I should be saying ‘Levi’s', like the jeans!

A good idea when having difficulties understanding or being understood is to ask how it’s spelled or to spell it yourself. Spelling in English, though, won’t help you very much. The way the French pronounce the alphabet is not the same, although they use the same twenty-six letters.

There are two approaches that I recommend for learning the French alphabet. Both are effective, but if you are not shy or self-conscious, I would go for the first option.

Method One

Go to youtube.com or any other video sharing site that also has pages in French. Do a search for ‘chanson alphabet’. You should find lots of videos of kids singing the alphabet in French to the tune of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ just like we teach our kids in English. Sing along with them! The melody and the rhythm will help you to remember the right pronunciation. Try to shake off any feelings you may have of being foolish or childish, remembering that child are incredibly efficient language learners and that you can learn something from their methods. Children learn languages by reciting songs and rhymes over and over. Do the same, it works.

Method Two

This is the grown-up way. Instead of reciting the alphabet in (alphabetic!) order, divide the letters in to similar sounds. The sounds you will hear in the French alphabet are roughly as follows:

‘ar’: A, H, K

‘ay’: B, C, D, G, P, T, V, W (pronounced ‘doobluh vay’ – double ‘v’)

‘e’: (like in ‘bed’) F, L, M, N, S, Z (pronounced ‘zed’)

‘ee’: I, J, X, Y (pronounced ‘eegrek’ meaning ‘Greek I’)

‘uh’: E

‘oh’: O

‘air’: R

‘oo’: U (say ‘oo’ not ‘you’, Q (say ‘koo’ not ‘queue’)

It is also a good idea to associate each of the letter sounds to a word that you know that contains that sound. For example, the French word for ‘tea’ is ‘le thé’ and has the same vowel as all the letters that are pronounced with ‘ay’.

Now you’re equipped with the French alphabet, one last thing you need to know is the question, ‘how do you spell that?’ It’s comment ça s’écrit, which literally means ‘how do you write it?’

Practice spelling your name in French, then your address. You now have a reliable communication tool to get you through those awkward moments when you can’t make yourself understood in French.

Learn French Now [http://speak-french-now.blogspot.com]. There are French courses [http://speak-french-now.blogspot.com] today that are not only effective, but fun too.

The French Language.

Roughly around 200 million people around the world speak French. This number includes people who speak French as a native language, as a second language and students of all ages who do not live in a francophone (French-speaking) country but have learned French. In fact French as a foreign language is the second most commonly taught language worldwide after English. It is also the only foreign language that can be useful throughout the world as well as in the United States. French comes in second after English on the list of the world’s 10 most influential languages. Proof of this is the pivotal role French holds. It is one of the official working languages in dozens of powerful international organisations such as the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), World Health Organisation (WHO), World Trade Organisation (WTO), and a host of other worldwide institutions.

The French language of today is a direct result of long periods of evolution. France, throughout its long history, had been invaded by different ethnic tribal groups. The most distinguished of these are the Franks. They adopted the Latin being spoken at that time. Thus, the French language is a descendant from Latin. It is also known as one of the Romance languages which include Catalan, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. They are called such because their parent tongue Latin was the language of the Romans. Over the years, the early French language has undergone changes in words and grammatical structures. It has evolved into today’s global French.

Frenchspeak – Here, There and Everywhere

The French-speaking world spans the entire globe with its language heard in all the continents. Aside from English, French is the only language spoken as a native or first language on 5 continents.

In Europe, French is the official language of France, Luxembourg, Monaco, Belgium and Switzerland. France with a population of more than 60 million is one of the most modern countries in the world. It is one of the predominant leaders in the European Union. French is a co-official language in Switzerland. This picturesque country is one of the world’s richest countries. It is the centre of many international associations. Belgium, in the half past century, has emerged as a progressive European state. Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is home to the headquarters of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

In Africa, the French-speaking countries include Algeria, Burundi, Benin, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Comoros. Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Guinea, Madagascar, Morocco, Rwanda, Togo, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Tunisia, Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles.

In the Americas and the Caribbean, French is spoken in Canada, Haiti, French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe (these last three are French territories).

In Australia and the Pacifics, Vanuatu and the overseas French territories French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Fortuna are French-speaking.

In many other countries, French plays a significant role either as an administrative, commercial or international language. Some of these countries are Andorra, Argentina, Brazil, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Egypt, Greece, India, Italy, Laos, Lebanon, Mauritania, Poland, Syria, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom (Channel Islands), United States particularly Louisiana and New England, the Vatican City and Vietnam. Clearly, the French language is spoken everywhere.

Convinced now to learn global French? It is quite easy. Browse through this site’s French Language Program and master French in the best place – the comfort of your own home.

Speak French by continuous practice. You can never tell yourself it's enough to practice the French pronunciation because it's better to learn it as you go along.

Interested in learning French lately? Magnifique! French language is such a rich language with a rich cultural background. If you can speak French, you are considered a person with such a great learning skill because speaking French is difficult. The pronunciation alone could take you months to master.

But this doesn’t entirely mean it’s impossible to learn French as a second language. This is one of the many reasons why many people easily gives up in learning the language or any other languages. But nothing can’t be learned if motivation, patience and practice is put in to the act of doing it.

Think about how the rest of the world tries to learn the English language. They too have difficulties of their own but since they expose themselves to everything English as they learn, they come out eventually, successful. The same result happens with a native English speaker since the accent and intonation can both be easily distinguished if it’s done by a native or not.

Online guides and free audio materials are helpful in learning the French language. There is much to it in the pronunciation of the French words that an English learner needs to learn and it is recommended that a person has to be exposed to French words, programs, songs and movies while on the process of learning.

To make sure you land yourself a good spot amongst native French speakers, make sure that you embrace the French alphabet and proper pronunciation. Having said this, we again go back to how practice should be done after French lessons. Nothing is better than putting to the test what you have learned so far. Even if this means you make mistakes. The truth is that you will never learn if you don’t commit mistakes. But if you think you always do, don’t worry, as long as you have the will to carry on, you will get over mistakes quick enough before you can say Ces’t la vie!

There may be times whenever we need to know a few simple French phrases. For example, if we are in an area where people predominantly speak the French language, it can be of real benefit to us to be able to say simple things, such as where is the bus station or where is the bathroom. Learning a few of these phrases is totally different than learning how to speak in French. Once you learn how to speak in French, you’re really able to communicate with individuals and to understand what they are saying as well as to have them understand what you’re saying.

You might be surprised to learn that it is not as difficult to learn how to speak in French as it is to learn many of the other languages that are out there. Some languages not only rely on the spoken word but they also rely on many inflections and perhaps even body language to help to get the point across. French also uses this to a certain degree but often, you are able to learn the spoken language and to communicate effectively, although at times in a broken way.

You might try learning how to speak in French by going to a community college and taking some night classes. Typically, it does not take many weeks for you to pick up enough of the language that you can use it effectively. It also helps if you are around individuals that are speaking this language on a regular basis. Not only can you imitate what they are saying, you are often able to pick up on subtle body language and inflections that you may not pick up from learning in the classroom environment.

You can also learn how to speak in French at home but it is going to take some determination on your part.
Learning French can be fun and fast if you have a teacher who has grasped some simple but important principles. Here are three things to look out for to see how your French teacher can help you get the most out of your learning experience.

How much fun it is or how fast you learn French will depend on how you are being taught. The best French teachers are always on the lookout for ways that make learning French both fast and fun. They are also interested in learning methods that meet your needs. Whether your need is in business, a better vacation experience, a closer relationship with your French partner or anything else.

Here are some of the ways that a top French teacher will set about capturing your interest and attention on what he or she wants to get over to you.

Top French teachers will ask you what you want to get out of learning French and whether you have any particular objectives that you want to meet. Although the situation will be different according to whether you are getting individual tuition or studying as part of a group, it is an important step. When you define clearly what you want, you are also aligning yourself for success sooner.

They will work with you and the French language using as many of your five senses as possible. The best French teachers know that the more ways they can link French words and phrases to different sensory perceptions in your brain, the more fun you will have and the better you will retain the information.

They will also involve you in the French learning experience and get you to contribute in the right proportion to the French they are teaching you. This is part of the “tell, show, do” methodology that can be so powerful in teaching French and other subjects. In simple terms it works like this. First I tell you what it’s all about. Then I show you by speaking the French words and putting together the French phrases. Then I get you to do it and help you to a successful conclusion.

In case you are wondering if all of the above only applies to human beings, we can take things a step further. Stand-alone French training course material that really works adopts a similar approach. So does teaching yourself. The goal is the same. To ensure the success that you expect, by making it possible for you to learn French in a way that is as fast and as fun as you want it to be.

Wouldn't you like to learn how to speak in another language such as French? Is it really that hard? Let me discuss with you some of the problems that can arise while trying to learn another language

Why is it so hard to learn the French language?

Have you ever wanted to learn a second language but it always seemed too hard? Or maybe thinking of learning another language brings back horrible memories from high school or maybe that adult education course you tried. Where you spent long nights and lots of frustration learning to pasts tests only to find out that when you were done you could barely say more than “Hello,” and “How are you?”

Maybe you just want a good refresher. I know I barely remember anything that I learned in high school. I also know that being able to speak another language makes a person seem more intelligent and interesting. How many people do you know can speak more than one language? I can’t name any. Maybe you can name a few. In social settings it’s a great way to break the ice, especially if you run into someone who else speaks the language.

Personally I would love to learn French. It sounds very beautiful and is very flowing, at least to the ears. Who wouldn’t like to speak in a fluid language that sounds great too? Or maybe you’re getting ready to travel to France for a vacation, or just know somebody who speaks French and want to relate to them more.

Whatever the reason, you know you want to learn a new language, but the courses are too hard or too long. Well wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to learn another language quickly and easily?

But what are some of the major problems with learning another language?

For me the biggest one is time. I don’t have two to four hours a day twice or more a week to attend a class. Let alone all the time it would take to do the homework and study up on the subject. Also what if I pick up on it really fast? I could try reading ahead but without the teachers guidance I am at a loss.

Plus learning a new language is the same as learning a new skill. In that regard some aspects of it will come easily to you and others will not. In a classroom setting you don’t have the chance to move quickly at the parts that are easy for you and slow down so you can hone your skills.

Home study courses are also expensive and you don’t normally get a tutor to help guide you along. It’s nice to be able to go at your own pace, but wouldn’t be easier if you could also get your questions answered from someone you know has the answers?

Lastly there is always the trial by fire method. Move to France, or maybe the more heavily French speaking populated areas of Canada, speak only to French people. Listen really hard and try to pick it up that way. It can be done; it just takes a few years. Do you have that kind of time? I know I don’t.

So is there a better option? There answer is yes. Yes there is a better way to learn how to speak the French language.

Are you looking for some tips on how to speak good French? If so, read on, because you are in the right place. In this article I’m going to show you three tips that will help you speak better French. Here they are!

1. Learn the real, spoken language by watching movies

Watching French movies (but not family movies) will help you learn the real, spoken French – slang, swear words, useful phrases, idioms and so on. Watch at least two or three French movies a week and you’ll quickly build up your vocabulary and speak more like a native speaker.

2. Learn from native speakers

Find a French pen pal (and exchange e-mails), a language partner (and speak on Skype) or meet in person with some native French speakers and have a conversation with them. Learning from native speakers is the best way to learn the spoken language.

You’ll also get some feedback on your French skills (but don’t forget to ask native speakers to correct you – most of them don’t do it out of courtesy) so you’ll be able to concentrate on the most serious mistakes and eliminate them.

3. Learn the French culture

Language is a part of a culture. You can’t understand a culture if you don’t speak its language. Learn something about France (or other French speaking countries) – for example read some articles on Wikipedia (of course in French!), listen to French music, travel to a French speaking country (travel broadens the mind, right?).

Here you go – three tips on how to speak good French. Don’t speak like a foreigner – improve your vocabulary, learn from native speakers and learn the French culture! Good luck and have fun while speaking French!
